Environmental Photographer of the Year

TOP ENTRIES SELECTED FOR EXHIBITION IN RGS - AND A FOREST NEAR YOU

The Royal Geographical Society is set to exhibit the best environmental, social and natural photographs from this year’s Environmental Photographer of the Year.

Outstanding entries have been selected for exhibition and will displayed at the RGS in London from 23 June to 4 July 2014, before beginning a tour of national forest venues, supported by Forestry Commission England. In addition, the new ‘Forestry Commission England Exhibition Award’ will be presented to one outstanding photographer, who will be invited to exhibit a solo show at one of England’s public forests.

Launched in 2007 by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), the Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year honours amateurs and professionals of all ages, and provides an opportunity for photographers to share images of environmental and social issues with international audiences.

Open to all

From this year the competition was free to enter and truly open to all. The aim is to enhance our understanding of the causes, consequences and solutions to climate change and social inequality through still photography and film.

The competition encouraged ‘contemporary, creative, resonant, challenging, original and beautiful’ entries and, most of all, pictures that will inspire people around the world to start taking care of our environment.

All entries have been judged on impact, composition, originality, creativity and technical ability. Previous entries have examined issues such as innovation, sustainable development, biodiversity, poverty, climate change, human rights, culture, natural disasters and population growth.

The prizes

This year’s selection panel included Paul Horton, Director of Membership and International Development, CIWEM and Olivier Laurent – Associate Editor at British Journal of Photography.

2014’s winners will be announced during a preview of the London exhibition. Prizes include:

  • Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year: £5,000
  • Atkins CIWEM Young Environmental Photographer of the Year (Under 18): £1,000
  • Atkins CIWEM Environmental Film of the Year: £1,000
  • Atkins Cityscape Prize: £1,000
  • Forestry Commission England Exhibition Award: One photographer will be invited to exhibit a solo show at one of England’s public forests

Michele Palazzi was awarded the CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year award in 2013 for ‘Gone with the Dust #02’. Palazzi, from Rome, was awarded £5,000 for his image of a young boy and his sister during a sand storm in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia.
