Veggie Pret here to stay

Pop-up vegan and vegetarian Pret to be made permanent – and more may follow

The nation’s first Veggie Pret – which started life as a month-long pop up – will be left as a permanent fixture in Soho, and the door’s wide open for others to open in different areas in the future.

Customer demand

Pret received over 20,000 customer comments in the 12 weeks leading up to the decision, with many offering thanks for what was seen as a bold move. Even Sir Paul McCartney emailed.

Clive Schlee, Pret’s CEO, put the shop’s success down to the fact that the move towards a plant-based diet is gathering momentum, especially among millennials. Pret’s goal now is to encourage meat eaters to try more veggie food – and it seems to be working.

Anecdotally over 50% of the customers at Veggie Pret say they are regular meat eaters. Vegan dishes and sweet treats are the biggest-sellers and the Cacao & Orange Pot has sold 10 times the number predicted.

‘We had expected sales in the shop to decline as a result of the pop up. After the massive hype of the first few weeks, sales at Veggie Pret are still well up on where they were before the conversion. It started out as an experiment in response to customer feedback and our customers have spoken loud and clear, so Veggie Pret is here to stay.’

The next Veggie Pret

The company is now debating where to open the second Veggie Pret – and it seems likely an existing shop on a visible corner in the City of London will be converted into another pop up. If it resonates with city workers it will be made permanent.

There’s a will to bring Veggie Pret to other cities – and a well-subscribed petition is calling on Pret to convert one of its two Cambridge shops.
