Grassroots climate organisation Parents for Future UK has announced the release of ‘Bank Heist –Goes Wrong’, featuring a team of Britain’s funniest rising comedians.
The comedians play bank robbers who dramatically abort their attempted robbery after discovering the banks’ investments are still supporting fossil fuels.
The sketch follows a crew of would-be master criminals who meticulously plan their bank robbery, only to have their entire operation unravel when they realise the ‘Generic bank’ is still profiting from oil and gas companies through their investments.
The result is both a great bit of comedy and a sharp commentary on climate greenwashing. Make sure you watch until the end for the twist when the police arrive.
‘Nothing says ‘we care about the climate’ quite like abandoning a crime spree because the bank’s portfolio is still investing in Big Oil. Sounds absurd, but it’s tragically close to reality. We wanted to create something that makes people laugh while quietly questioning the ethics of their bank. Laughter served with a demand for change.’
CHARLOTTE HOWELL
Co-director, Parents for Future UK
‘Bank Heist – Goes Wrong’ stars comedy and climate talent Matt Winning, who also wrote the sketch that brings fresh perspective to climate activism, alongside Ed Jones, Jordan Brookes, Camille Ucan, Daman Bamrah, Jake Roche, Abigail Weinstock and Rosalind Adler.
‘I wanted to get people thinking more about the positive impacts they can make. Switching banks is one of the best things you can do as an individual to take climate action. The hardened but climate conscious criminals in the sketch were a perfect vehicle to explore greenwashing and who is really robbing our children of their futures.’
MATT WINNING
Comedian
The sketch, supported by Triodos Bank UK, marks Parents for Future UK’s latest innovative approach to climate communication, following its recent heat pump sketches and TV ad campaign.
By working with Warming Up Comedy, Turtle Canyon Comedy and top comedy talent, the organisation aims to reach new audiences and make taking action to protect what we love more accessible and engaging.
‘I’d always wanted to direct a bank heist scene so when you get a great cast together and a production team that makes things look and sound great my job is literally just to stand by, watch a monitor and laugh at the brilliant performances and feel lucky that this is my job.’
