My Green Pod Hero Delphina Hotels & Resorts has recently added to its trophy case with five major gongs at the World Travel Awards 2022, held in Mallorca on 01 October 2022.

The chain was named Europe’s Leading Green Independent Hotel Group 2022 and Italy’s Leading Hotel Group 2022.

Resort Valle dell’Erica Thalasso & SPA was named Europe’s Leading Green Resort 2022 and Italy’s Leading Green Resort 2022. Resort & SPA Le Dune won the award for Italy’s Leading Beach Resort 2022.

Environmental dedication

Francesco Muntoni, founder and president of Delphina Hotels & Resorts, was recently awarded Knight of Merit of the Republic by the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella for his contribution to Gallura as a visionary entrepreneur who has paved the way for luxury tourism, while protecting and preserving the land and culture of Sardinia.

Elena Muntoni, Brand Manager for Delphina hotels & resorts, recently won the Commitment to the Environment 2022 at The NORNS Special Awards 2022 for the world-renowned We Are Green Project®, which she leads at Delphina Hotels & Resorts.

This award acknowledges the environmental dedication in preserving Sardinia’s incredible landscape and leading the way for the independent hotel chain to become increasingly sustainable resorts.

The NORNS Special Awards honours individuals who have distinguished themselves through their careers, leadership, and achievements, by making a significant and lasting contribution to the world through innovation.

‘We have worked really hard for many years to invest and implement sustainable practices in everything we do, and this award is an amazing acknowledgement of that commitment. Winning The NORNS Special Awards this year for our environmental efforts gives us the motivation to go even further to pave the green road ahead to provide responsible quality tourism.’

Eco luxury in Sardinia

To enhance its commitment to eco-sustainable practices and the environment, Delphina introduced and registered its own We Are Green® brand several years ago.

It is the first Italian hotel chain to use 100% green energy, coming exclusively from renewable sources, in all hotels, resorts and headquarters. In the last five years Delphina has saved 16,918 tonnes of CO2, the equivalent absorbed by 119,612 trees in one year.

Sustainable practices include limiting the use of plastic in favour of biodegradable materials for lunch boxes, straws, cutlery, plates and glasses, and replacing plastic bottles in the hotels with glass, Tetra Pak or cans. Staff and collaborators received a free reusable water bottle to refill in specially installed fountains, which resulted in saving 68,700 plastic bottles per year.

Delphina uses Ecolabel products for ordinary cleaning, and the courtesy line of SPA products is eco-bio certified and paraben free. The hotels and resorts provide electric vehicles for guests, which are recharged on site.

Vegetable-based inks are used for printing catalogues, with paper and covers all made with certified ecological cellulose to ensure entire recyclability.

To create an authentic and sustainable stay for guests, Sardinian arts, crafts, entertainment, manufacturers and services are all sourced locally. Food and wine are also preferably sourced locally through the Genuine Local Food Oriented® project, a Delphina quality brand focusing on a healthy, high-quality cuisine based on genuine ingredients that respect seasonality, ideally at 0 km.

One of Delphina’s hotels in Badesi, Resort & SPA Le Dune, houses a five-hectare vegetable garden with a range of aromatic herbs and fruits trees for guests to enjoy, while serving an educational role for children. This also acts as a source of supply for zero km ingredients across all resorts.

Delphina is also a Corporate Golden Donor in support of the FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano in the protection of the Italian cultural and naturalistic heritage.

‘Sardinia’s unique nature is our primary resource and has always been at the centre of our projects. Winning for four consecutive years the title of Europe’s Leading Green Resort and being awarded as Europe’s Leading Green Independent Hotel Group 2022 is proof that we are on the right track. It is a sign of how it is possible to do business whilst respecting and enhancing the environment.

‘From the very beginning, we have ensured that every single building fits harmoniously into the surrounding landscape, is close to nature and respects the traditions of this land. We would like to thank all those who have rewarded our actions and our green philosophy, which from the very beginning has been based on sustainability, love for nature and providing a local and family touch that we continuously try to convey.’
