Last night (09 September) Sir Roger Gale, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his decades-long commitment to environmentalism and animal welfare.
Hosted by Nature 2030, an environmental campaign by Higginson Strategy, the 2025 Political Purpose Awards celebrated Sir Roger Gale’s long-standing advocacy for animal rights.
As a Member of Parliament for Herne Bay and Sandwich, Sir Roger Gale actively supported the Animal Welfare Bill and criticised attempts to preserve harmful practices like bullfighting and foxhunting.
During his career, Sir Roger has actively supported ending illegal wildlife trafficking, strongly opposed foxhunting and has repeatedly advocated for bans on cages and crates for farm animals and stronger enforcement of farm animal welfare conditions.
‘This recognition is a powerful reminder that we must never relent in our efforts to protect the most vulnerable animals from the suffering caused by cruelty, indifference, and greed, and to ensure their welfare is safeguarded for generations to come.’

This award is given to politicians who have consistently delayed, obstructed or opposed progress on environmental issues.
The awards were opened by Dale Vince OBE, green energy industrialist and founder of Ecotricity, who emphasised the importance of politicians campaigning on environmental issues.
‘The green economy is one of the greatest opportunities we’ve got for jobs, for economic growth, and for cutting bills. Politicians who embrace this deserve recognition, those who do the opposite deserve to be called out.
‘So, we’ll be celebrating those doing good and inspiring action, and we’ll also be shining a light on the political villains who are making us all poorer in their quest for power.’DALE VINCE OBE
