Activists from underground climate group Shut The System have sabotaged snow machines on the Davos ski slopes as international power holders and billionaires flocked to the Swiss ski town for the World Economic Forum (WEF), which started on Tuesday (20 Jan).

The saboteurs cut power cables supplying snow machines on the Jakobshorn ski run above Clavadel.

They used natural pigment to write blood-red messages alongside the ski runs stating: ‘Summit of Delusion’ and ‘Shut the System’.

‘WEF is a death cult for the financial elites. Each year, the world’s wealthiest fly to Davos by private jet and helicopter to network and get stinking rich by any means, no matter the cost to life – all while the poor get poorer and the climate emergency escalates.

‘Nowadays Davos uses machines to create fake snow because global warming prevents that happening naturally. But they will do anything to prolong their hedonistic lifestyles without having to confront the truth: they are the problem.’

Billionaires talk climate change

Each year, world leaders, key financial players and a rising influx of billionaires meet at WEF to discuss how to address issues such as poverty and climate change.

These meetings have taken places over decades of rising inequality and greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2020, WEF stated that missing the 2ºC target for global warming would mean ‘climate apocalypse’.

Many experts say that reaching this target will be impossible without a significant transformation of the economy.

‘The 2ºC limit is not impossible. It is simply impossible for the 1% to contemplate because any legitimate pathway for limiting global warming threatens their disproportionate wealth and power.’

Inaction at WEF

WEF is increasingly criticised for its lack of transparency and inaction; a fraction of the conference is televised but the main conversations happen behind closed doors.

According to Shut the System, investigations from recent years have exposed participants’ racism, hedonism and apathy towards the climate emergency.
