A new cross-party Climate and Nature Crisis Caucus (CNCC) was launched in Parliament yesterday (Wednesday 29 October), bringing together MPs and peers committed to tackling the interconnected crises of climate change and nature breakdown.
The Caucus, chaired by Labour MP Olivia Blake, aims to rebuild and strengthen the long-standing consensus that has underpinned UK leadership on climate action for more than a decade, ensuring that Parliament continues to play a central role in driving solutions that are good for people, the planet and the economy.
The launch brought leading environmental voices together in Westminster. Dozens of MPs and peers from Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party were in attendance.
‘I am fed up with people talking as if there are two sides to this issue. There are not.
‘[…] Which is why Kemi Badenock is entirely wrong. We have got to have the Climate Change Act which is the reason why we have got as far as we have. And we have to remember how far we have come.’LORD DEBEN
Former Conservative Environment Secretary
The launch was timed to coincide with the publication of the Government’s Carbon Budget and Growth Delivery plan, which the Caucus views as a critical opportunity to demonstrate how environmental action can benefit local people’s everyday lives.
Organisers warned that the long-standing political consensus on climate action is under strain from growing anti-science rhetoric, and that new forms of cross-party collaboration are needed to reignite the national mission to tackle climate change and restore nature.
‘Given all the benefits of acting on climate change – slowing down now would not just be a mistake it would be an act of national sabotage. Every year of delay drives up costs, deepens inequality, and leaves us more vulnerable to shocks home and abroad. Now is the time for action.
‘I know this Parliament can show cross-party collaboration because we’ve done it before. In 2008 with the Climate Change Act and then in 2019 when Parliament declared a climate emergency.
‘[…] This Caucus will restore a shared sense of purpose and rebuild consensus, resist division and remind the country that action of climate and nature is not optional. It is essential.’OLIVIA BLAKE MP
Chair of the Climate and Nature Crisis Caucus
The Caucus will provide a forum for MPs and peers from all parties to collaborate on joined-up solutions to the climate and nature crisis.
It will focus on how bold action to reduce emissions and restore nature can deliver tangible benefits for communities and households, from lowering energy bills and improving health to protecting the natural landscapes that define the UK.
Members will seek to bring forward the strong economic case for action to promote joined-up government working and adaptation strategies.
The CNCC is being supported by the climate and nature campaign group Zero Hour as its secretariat.
‘We stand at a crossroads right now, climate breakdown is no longer a distant or abstract thing. Nature is in free fall, and I can tell you that without ambiguity.
‘Let’s make sure that Government policy works like a beaver dam – not blocking progress, but shaping the UK in a way that serves life. I know that, and with Olivia as chair, this new Climate and Nature Crisis Caucus could be the start of something genuinely transformative. A place where cross-party collaboration becomes the rule, not the exception. A place where science, compassion and courage drive decisions.’CHRIS PACKHAM
