The first awards for British politicians who have made a difference to the environment will take place this year.

The Nature 2030 Political Purpose Awards will be hosted in the House of Lords in September.

Judges for the inaugural awards include Will McCallum, co-executive director of Greenpeace; Hugo Tagholm, UK executive director of Oceana and James Wallace, CEO of River Action.

Political Purpose Award categories

The awards are the first to honour the environmental work and efforts of politicians over the past year.

They will cover politicians from the House of Commons, House of Lords, devolved assemblies and mayors representing both metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas.

The judges will award politicians across five categories: Wildlife Protection; Marine Environment Protection; Pollution, Waste & Air; Habitats, Biodiversity & Green Space and Green Energy & Renewables.

Nature 2030 will also present a Lifetime Achievement Award to a politician who has championed environmental causes throughout their career.

‘In the next couple of years we could see the greatest Parliamentary upheaval for two decades. It is crucial that the new representatives go further and faster than their predecessors on climate and conservation issues.

‘Our hope is that by hosting the first environmental political awards, the next generation of politicians will be inspired to play their part in protecting our nature from environmental catastrophe.’

DOMINIC DYER
Chair of Nature 2030

Environmental champions

Nature 2030 specifically aims to reward politicians who have championed environmental causes with little incentive and have surpassed the baseline expectations in their roles.

The campaign group hopes the awards will incentivise more politicians to devote time to protecting the environment.

Nature 2030 will announce the politicians shortlisted for the awards in August and will hold the awards annually.
