Liquorice is an herbaceous perennial plant that is native to several areas of the world, including southern Russia, the Mediterranean, parts of Asia and southern areas of Europe. The part of the liquorice plant that is utilised as a flavouring agent and as a traditional remedy is the Liquorice Root. Liquorice contains specific chemical constituents that give it the sweet distinctive flavour, recognised by those who enjoy Liquorice Candy. Liquorice is also used to flavour tobacco products, beverages and foods.

It’s interesting to note, that most American Liquorice candy does not actually contain any liquorice at all, but instead uses other flavouring agents, such as star anise extract, or artificial liquorice flavouring.
