An excavator beside a drainage canal in recently cleared peatland forest in an oil palm concession owned by PT Ladang Sawit Mas, a subsidiary of Bumitama Agri Ltd. The concession, in Nanga Tayap sub-district, Ketapang district, West Kalimantan, contained habitat for numerous endangered species including orangutans and Müller’s Bornean gibbons. The company claimed to have suspended all forest clearance in early 2013 after the dramatic rescue of stranded orangutans. However Greenpeace mapping analysis and field investigations reveal large-scale development in the concession between December 2012 and October 2013, including clearance of over 1,150ha of forest.
