Retune your engine for greener driving

YOU DON’T NEED TO FORK OUT ON A NEW HYBRID OR EV TO CUT YOUR EMISSIONS ON THE ROAD

Last July, Vince Cable announced the Government and car industry had joined forces in a long-term partnership that has been bubbling away since 2009. Over the next 10 years, they will plough a combined £1 billion into ramping up the UK’s production and manufacture of advanced propulsion technologies.

Currently only a third of the parts that go into UK vehicles are actually made in the UK, so investment in greener technology on the road could also help create jobs and boost the economy.

A decade is a long time to wait for a set of eco-friendly wheels, but there are ways to cut your emissions without having to wait for technology that hasn’t yet been developed. Tuning the engine that’s already under your bonnet generate big savings on your emissions and fuel – and take the pressure off your wallet as well as the environment.

How does a retune work?

If you bought your car after 2002, the chances are it’s controlled by a computer and runs on a combination of software and pre-set programmes. The good news is that, because software can be replaced, you can essentially rewire your car’s brain to change the way it works.

Each litre of diesel oil belches 2.68kg of carbon dioxide out into the atmosphere; by placing straightforward limits on speed, throttle and revs, you can maximise your car’s efficiency and cut fuel consumption by up to 15%.

Vehicle tuning isn’t a new idea and you’ll probably have come across terms like ‘chip-tuning’ and ‘ECU remapping’ before. But retuning isn’t solely for the boy racers on the road; while most vehicle tuning services focus on lifting manufacturer limits to squeeze that extra bit of speed and power out of your car, Viezu has spotted the potential in moving in the opposite direction.

Its alternative BlueOptimize™ software opens up all sorts of retuning possibilities to make your car more fuel-efficient. The software is completely custom written, so Viezu can tweak your vehicle to your own requirements – cutting fuel consumption and generating savings at the pump.

A green retune will pack the greatest punch if you drive a diesel car. Each litre of diesel oil belches 2.68kg of carbon dioxide out into the atmosphere; by placing straightforward limits on speed, throttle and revs, you can maximise your car’s efficiency and cut fuel consumption by up to 15%.

The software won’t generate the same savings on petrol vehicles, but a retune will still improve smoothness and performance – without having any other impact on the way your car looks or feels.

Engines of the future

The government has acknowledged that ‘almost none’ of the new cars in Europe will be powered entirely by traditional diesel or petrol engines by 2040, and has spotted that this ‘once in a lifetime technology change’ presents a window of opportunity for UK industry.

Britain is the fourth largest producer of vehicles in Europe, with a car, van, bus or truck rolling off a UK production line every 20 seconds.

The establishment of an Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) to develop, commercialise and manufacture advanced propulsion technologies is a step forward in the move towards a greener UK car industry.

Britain is the fourth largest producer of vehicles in Europe, with a car, van, bus or truck rolling off a UK production line every 20 seconds. This added up to 1.58 million vehicles in 2012 alone.

According to the government’s strategy for growth and sustainability in the UK automotive sector, ‘The challenge is to maintain this momentum to secure the long term future of the sector by growing the UK share of the value chain and by getting ahead of the game in research and development (R&D) on ultra-low emission vehicles.’

The strategy outlines a 20 to 30 year plan for how this might be achieved, with the government and car industry working together to make the most of opportunities to develop new, low emission technologies that can be manufactured and sold in the UK.

In the meantime…

As we wait for this strategy to unfold, retuning your own car using BlueOptimize™ software will help you cut general emissions and carbon for every mile you drive in your own car – and savings will kick in as soon as the software’s installed.

BlueOptimize™ comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee and can usually be installed in under an hour, with no additional costs for parts or maintenance. The one-time installation should cost somewhere in the region of £300, though it varies from vehicle to vehicle so speak to one of Viezu’s professionals to get a quote for your current model.

Viezu, winner of the 2013 PEAB Award in the CEO category, is the UK’s only ISO-certified tuning and training provider, and is used by fleet and industry professionals the world over.
