PETA petitions the UK’s biggest bakery chain to add a vegan sausage roll to its menu

Citing an ever-expanding vegan market, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is petitioning popular bakery chain Greggs to add a vegan sausage roll to its menu.

The push comes after two years of efforts by PETA to urge the company – whose current vegan offering consists only of potato wedges, mince pies and soya milk for hot drinks – to create a plant-based version of its classic grab-and-go pastry snack.

‘More people than ever are clamouring for healthy vegan options from their favourite on-the-go eateries. PETA is calling on Greggs to heed this growing demand, add a vegan sausage roll to the menu and watch the cruelty-free treats fly off the shelves.’

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that ‘animals are not ours to eat’ – has documented that in the UK meat industry, farmers clip or grind down many piglets’ teeth and cut their tails off without any painkillers.

After female pigs give birth, they’re confined to farrowing crates so small that they can’t even turn around, let alone fulfil their strong urge to build a nest as they would naturally do.

They’re forcibly impregnated over and over again, and each litter of piglets is torn away from them after only a few weeks and transported to fattening pens before eventually being sent to slaughter.

In addition to sparing more than 100 animals a year a violent and terrifying death, vegans are less prone to suffering from heart disease, diabetes, strokes, obesity and cancer than meat-eaters are.

They also have smaller carbon footprints, as the meat industry is a major producer of the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change.
