June 18 2015 is a huge day for coordinated global action on climate change. Live Earth will join together 100 artists on seven continents to mobilise one billion voices calling for action.

If Live Earth is the passion moving our hearts then the Climathon is the brain – backing up the surging emotions with ideas, solutions and the technology to make it happen.

The Climathon

The Climathon is a 24-hour hackathon-style climate change event, organised by Climate-KIC, that will take place simultaneously in major cities in Asia, Oceania, Europe and South and North America.

City citizens around the world will get to take direct climate action in their own cities by coming up with innovative solutions to local climate change problems. Participants apply to take part, and the best candidates will be invited to the Climathon.

How it works

Cities around the world – from Brisbane to Beijing – will take part, with city authorities putting forward their local climate change challenges.

During the Climathon event, up to 30 participants per city will meet simultaneously for a 24-hour marathon session to work on innovative solutions to local problems.

The challenge is to create software, apps and business models that help transform cities into part of the solution – acting to stabilise our atmosphere and support the healthy functioning of the biosphere.

All individual events will be linked up digitally to allow for intercontinental collaboration.

Results will be presented at the UN’s COP21 climate change conference in Paris, to which the students, start-ups, (budding) entrepreneurs, big thinkers, technical experts and app developers who come up with the best solutions will be invited.

The Road to Paris

June 18 is just the beginning. The most promising ideas and business plans will then be nurtured over the rest of the year in the run-up to the next major UN climate conference – COP21 in Paris in December – where they will be unveiled at a celebratory ceremony.

Climathon is an opportunity to turn ideas, creativity and technology into real-world solutions that transform our cities.
