Food and the gender gap – ending food insecurity will remain a dream unless we close agriculture gender gap, says Fairtrade
While some progress has been made towards equality between women and men around the world, the pace of change has been too slow and the gap remains unacceptably wide.
Globally, the average gender pay gap is 24%. At the current rate, it will take 118 years for the gender pay gap around the world to be closed.
The gender pay gap is just one example of discrimination that is holding women back around the world. Oxfam argues only when women are unlimited can poverty be undone for everyone.
‘This one-off, four-day sale will offer customers to Oxfam’s Online Shop a discount of 13.9% – the same as the average gender pay gap in the UK. It is important to get the message across that women in Britain and around the world still earn less than men and highlight the inequality that women face. We’re launching this quirky sale to raise awareness and get people talking about this inequality.’

As well as the Gender Pay Gap Sale, Oxfam is hosting the following events to mark International Women’s Day.
8 March 2016, Leicester Square Theatre, London
Women Stand Up features some of the UK’s funniest comedians, including Luisa Omielan, Tiff Stevenson, Shazia Mirza, Zoe Lyons, Mae Martin and Lou Sanders. Tickets cost £20 and all sales will all go to help fund Oxfam’s work with women: fighting poverty, combatting violence against women and girls, and supporting women to gain their rights.
8-13 March 2016, 11am-6pm (free entry), Old Truman Brewery, London
Oxfam has teamed up with acclaimed photo agency Magnum Photos for the exhibition ‘Women Unlimited’ to highlight Oxfam’s work with women around the world. Curated by Lauren Heinz, the exhibition features images from leading female Magnum photographers Bieke Depoorter, Cristina Garcia Rodero, Olivia Arthur and Newsha Tavakolian, who visited Oxfam projects in Chad, Armenia, Sri Lanka and Wales. The result is a remarkable collection of stories – and a stark reminder of women’s unlimited potential to end poverty.
